A city as storied as Durham is sure to have some tales to tell. With the iconic cathedral alone dating back to the 11th century, the city on the River Wear is home to history at every corner.
Andrew Ross, is looking to shine a light on Durham’s grizzly past, bringing to life the history of some of the city’s most infamous residents who have lived and died in the city. His bone chilling ghost walks, which have gained the support of GLOW Creative and Durham Bid.
Andrew, The Ghost Whisperer of Durham, has been walking with the city’s ghosts for 18 months. He has been leading the hardy souls of the North East along the same streets filled with hundreds of years of murder, mischief, mayhem and legend that many may not even be aware of, including;
- Jimmy Allen, whose pipes can still be heard at night after being imprisoned beneath Elvet Bridge – dying days before a pardon arrived.
- The Durham Puma, said to roam the woods around the city.
- Mary Ann Cotton, one of Britain’s first female serial killers, who died in Durham’s prison in the 1800s
David Elliott, from GLOW Creative explains it’s always exciting to see something new come to the city.
“I’ve got nothing but admiration for Andrew and it’s fantastic what he does on his own. We love Durham and the Halloween season at GLOW so it’s great to be able to offer Andrew some support with social media and graphic design over the next six weeks.
“Durham is such a rich historical city and he really brings that to life. It’s going to be fantastic working with Andrew over the next few weeks and watching his business grow.”
Durham BID are also getting behind Andrew, with free on-street advertising. Paul Howard, from the BID says the walks will be a welcome addition to the city’s offering.
“We’re always happy to support people who are passionate about Durham and Andrew definitely fits that. His knowledge and love of the city and its spookier past is really infectious and makes the ghost walks a fantastic addition to Durham and a great boost to our nighttime economy.”
